Dear Cross Country Parent,

Your child has expressed an interest in being a member of the Williamsburg Cross Country Team for 2019.  This team is open to students in Grades 2-8. All runners are welcome regardless of running background or ability.  Simply put, you show up, put forth the commitment at practices…YOU WILL MAKE THE TEAM!

PRACTICES: We will practice on Tuesday, September 10 and 17 at Heber Down Conservation Area  from 3:00-3:50pm (transportation NOT provided - please note there is a $3.00 parking fee at Heber Down). Students will need to arrange rides to get to Heber Down.  We have already begun talking about this at school. If a student is unable to attend the Heber Down practice, they are asked to at least attend the lunch time practice at school.  We will have further training at school every day at the beginning of lunch (11-11:15am) plus interval/speed training on Friday mornings, September 13, 20 and 27 from (7:15-7:50am).  Students are encouraged to attend as many practices as possible to help improve overall running ability. Attendance will be taken at practices (especially those held at school).

MINI-MEETS: We have two meets already confirmed.  We will run at Glen Dhu PS in Whitby on Wed., Sept. 18.  This meet begins at 4pm and ends at approx. 6pm. Our second meet will be at

R. S. McLaughlin SS in Oshawa on Tues., Sept. 24, beginning at 4pm and ending at 6:15pm.  The younger athletes run first and the older athletes near the end. Students must make arrangements to be driven to and from these meets.  Students are asked to meet the team at the meet approx. 30-40min before their race time to allow for proper warm up. Details on exact race times will be sent via ‘Remind’ when they become available.  Sign up for ‘Remind’ using the code on the back of this letter.

AREA MEET: Our Area Meet will take place on Wednesday, October 2 in the afternoon at Lakeridge Ski Resort in North Durham (Uxbridge). A bus will take students from school to Lakeridge and will be available to take them back to Williamsburg when it is over.  Details will be sent home via remind.

  • For early morning practices, it may be cool and wet.  Dress appropriately and possibly bring extra socks and shoes.

  • Training with your child at home will greatly benefit and improve your child’s ability and stamina.

  • A detailed calendar and permission form will be sent home next week.

  • Please sign up for the Cross Country Remind  or visit the Williamsburg website under Athletics.  If you still require assistance, do not hesitate to speak to one of the coaches.

  • Fees to help subsidise the cost of entrance fees for meets and the bus to Lakeridge is $5.00 and can be paid on School Cash Online.

Important Notes:

The weather during Cross Country season can be unpredictable.  Students need to dress for the weather as practices and meets will go rain or shine (thunder and lightning will force a “storm date” or cancellation).

-Hat

-Jacket

-Light gloves

-Appropriate footwear – running shoes please!

-Water bottle

-Extra socks

Parents are always welcome to come out and run during practices.

A school shirt is required for all cross country meets.

***Please be aware that due to the high number of participants at Cross Country meets, if you are interested in finding out what place your child finishes you are expected to check the score board.  Coaches do not usually have this information. Thanks.

Students who qualify at the Area meet (Oct 2) to move on to the Regional meet will have additional practices during the week following our Area meet.  “Qualifying students” are runners who finish as individuals in the top 8 with their age group OR in the top 4 as a team (groups of 4-6 runners of the same age group).  The Regional meet will be October 9.

**Parents of students in grade two, please be aware that your child may run with the “born in 2011” age group when there is no official grade two division.
